Dr. Axel Haupt is Senior Vice President, Clinical Innovation - Metabolic Diseases and Women's Health, at Eli Lilly and Company. Over more than 15 years at Lilly, he has led teams spanning drug discovery, early- and late-phase clinical development across diabetes, obesity, MASLD and related metabolic diseases, and currently leads early phase clinical development for Women's Health. Notably, Dr. Haupt has led early clinical development for key Lilly assets, such as tirzepatide, orfoglipron, and retatrutide, and he has been spearheading Lilly's entry into new areas, such as cardiovascular disease, MASLD, and more recently Women's Health. He began his research career as a clinical trialist at the University of Tübingen, where he has held the title of Privatdozent (Associate Professor) in Internal Medicine since 2011. He received his M.D. from the Freie Universität and Humboldt Universität, Berlin, and holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Angiology, and Diabetology.
