Physician-Scientist | Biotechnology Executive

Jason Campagna is a physician-scientist and biotechnology executive with more than three decades of experience spanning academic medicine, health systems leadership, and global drug development. He currently serves as President of R&D and Chief Medical Officer at Inventiva, where he leads the global development of lanifibranor for the treatment of fibrosis and cirrhosis due to MASH.

Prior to joining Inventiva, Jason was Chief Medical Officer at Q32 Bio, where he oversaw development of immune-targeted therapies aimed at restoring homeostasis across both innate and adaptive pathways. Before that, he was Chief Medical Officer at Intercept Pharmaceuticals, where he directed development and regulatory strategy across the company’s cholestatic and fibrotic liver disease portfolio. As Global NASH Lead at Intercept, he led pivotal programs across multiple regulatory jurisdictions and played a central role in pre-commercial planning and strategic positioning of novel agents in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving space.

Earlier, Jason held senior executive roles at The Medicines Company, including as Head of the Surgery and Perioperative Care unit, where he led the development and approval of multiple first-in-class therapies spanning drugs, biologics, and drug–device combinations. His earlier leadership at Cottage Health System, combined with academic appointments at UC Santa Barbara and Stanford, reflects a longstanding interest in clinical systems improvement and translational neuroscience. He began his clinical and academic career on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts General Hospital, focusing on thoracic anesthesia and critical care, and NIH-funded research in neural plasticity.

Jason holds an MD and PhD in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology from the University of Miami and completed his residency and fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has served on the boards of both private and public companies, as well as advisory committees focused on early-stage biotech, translational research, and scientific innovation.

He lives with his family in Concord, Massachusetts. Outside of work, he enjoys time outdoors, writing, and reading across history, science, and the arts, with longstanding interests at the intersection of biomedical innovation, ethics, and systems thinking.
