Mazen Noureddin, MD, MHSc, is a Professor of Medicine and an internationally recognized leader in Steatotic Liver Disease (SLD) and SLD-related cirrhosis. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Southern California (USC), followed by advanced hepatology training at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the NIDDK Liver Diseases Branch, where he also earned an NIH/Duke Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Research. He subsequently completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) as a T32 NIH fellow. He joined USC as Assistant Professor in 2013 and was recruited to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2015 as the founding Director of the Fatty Liver Program. Dr. Noureddin is internationally known for his translational and clinical research in SLD, including disease mechanisms, non-invasive diagnostics, biomarkers, and therapeutic development across the SLD spectrum. He has led or participated in more than 100 investigational clinical trials, serving as Global Principal Investigator or steering committee member on many landmark SLD sponsored studies. He is a recognized expert in non-invasive testing and has played a central role in advancing MRI-based, serum-based, and composite biomarkers for SLD and cirrhosis. He has been invited to multiple international consensus panels by major liver societies, including AASLD, EASL, APASL, and ALEH, and is a frequent invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings. He has served as Chair of the AASLD MASLD Special Interest Group, sits on several industry steering and advisory committees, and serves on the editorial boards of leading journals including Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, where he is also an Associate Editor. He is one of the incoming Associate Editors for Gastroenterology in 2026. He has received NIH and National Cancer Institute funding and has served as a reviewer on NIH study sections. Dr. Noureddin has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, including articles in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Nature Medicine, Science Translational Medicine, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, and Gastroenterology. He has served as a first or senior author on major clinical trials published in The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet. In 2022, Dr. Noureddin moved to Houston, where he is currently Professor of Medicine at the Lynda K. and David M. Underwood Center for Digestive Disorders, J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center, and Sherrie & Alan Conover Center for Liver Disease & Transplantation at Houston Methodist Hospital (ranked #5 in GI and GI Surgery by U.S. News & World Report). He founded the Houston Research Institute, a state-of-the-art private facility providing patients access to innovative non-invasive diagnostics and breakthrough therapies in liver disease. He also serves as Chief Scientific Officer and Co-Chairman of the Board for Summit Clinical Research Soultions.
